Latina Mezzo-soprano Ruby Abreu is making a name for herself nationally and internationally for her powerful voice and nuanced characterizations.
This upcoming semester, Ruby will be making her role debut as Madame de la Haltière in Longy’s fall opera production of Cendrillon. Additionally, she has been recently appointed as the alto section leader at the United Parish of Brookline, where she will begin her new role this fall.
During her first semester at Longy, Ruby performed the role of Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel and premiered a new work by Kevin Lubin, “The Cats Have Come to Tea,” at the New Works by Longy Composers concert. Upcoming performances for Spring 2024 include a lead role in Sondheim on Sondheim and Idamante in a scene from Idomeneo in the La Voce Totale orchestra concert.
In the summer of 2023, Ruby made her European debut at the 22nd Annual Varna International Music Academy, performing in Bulgaria and Italy as the alto soloist in the Mozart Requiem and as the Monitor and Abbess in Suor Angelica.
Ruby's other staged roles include Mrs. Nolan in The Medium with Musical Traditions, Inc., Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance, and Ado Annie in Some Enchanted Evening while at Rollins College. In spring 2023, she performed her first recital, From There to Back Again, exploring the cyclical themes of life, love, and death. Ruby also performed on behalf of the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park at the Ukraine Ballet Benefit at the Dr. Phillips Center, which was filmed and broadcast internationally. Additionally, she was a featured soloist at the 26th Moravian Music Festival in Bethlehem, PA. At Rollins, Ruby was a featured soloist for the Songs of the Season program at the Dr. Phillips Center. She also performs with J.M. Voices, an a cappella group led by John Maclane Schirard. From 2021-2023, Ruby led the St. Gregory Choir as the Alto section leader at All Saints Episcopal Church, Winter Park.
Ruby is currently the Marketing Manager for the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park, where she plays a pivotal role in shaping the organization's public image and outreach efforts. She began this position following her successful tenure as the Social Media Manager for the Department of Music at Rollins College. After graduating from Rollins, Ruby was appointed to this role, where she created compelling marketing content for department events and led the marketing efforts for the Summer Music Academy and spring productions. Her innovative approach and dedication quickly garnered attention, leading to her appointment at the Bach Festival Society. Now, she oversees all aspects of television and radio media, ensuring the society's events and programs are prominently featured and attract a broad audience. Ruby also manages the society’s social media presence, crafting engaging content that highlights upcoming performances, educational programs, and community initiatives. Her strategic approach to brand marketing has significantly elevated the society's profile, fostering greater community engagement and support. Additionally, Ruby collaborates with local media outlets to secure coverage that enhances the visibility of the Bach Festival Society's contributions to the cultural landscape. Her efforts have been instrumental in expanding the society’s reach and influence, making classical music accessible to a wider audience. She still creates impactful marketing materials for the Department of Music at Rollins College as a graphic designer.
Ruby's enthusiasm for music extends beyond her performances; with expertise in website design and photography, she offers valuable services to musicians and non-profits within the music industry seeking to broaden their artistic influence with an authentic representation. She has helped numerous artists and organizations develop their online presence, creating visually engaging websites and capturing compelling images that highlight their unique talents and missions. Ruby’s skills in digital marketing, combined with her deep understanding of the music industry, enable her to craft tailored strategies that enhance visibility and engagement for her clients. Whether through crafting compelling narratives for social media, designing user-friendly websites, or providing high-quality photography, Ruby is dedicated to helping musicians and non-profits effectively communicate their artistry and reach a wider audience.
When she’s not singing, Ruby is learning French on Duolingo, making friends laugh, and baking cookies.
Ruby is pursuing a Master of Music degree at Longy School of Music, where she studies with Professor Carol Mastrodomenico and is a Garth and Lindsay Greimann Equity Scholar. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Rollins College, where she studied with Dr. Caitlin Mohr.
